How Do Bees Keep Their Hive Cool in Summer? | Home Farm MK

When temperatures soar, many of us reach for a cold drink, find some shade or switch on a fan. But what about honeybees?

Inside a busy beehive, tens of thousands of bees are working together in a surprisingly small space. With the warmth generated by the colony and the summer sun beating down outside, you might expect the hive to become unbearably hot.

Remarkably, honeybees have developed one of nature's most effective air-conditioning systems, keeping the centre of their hive at an almost constant temperature even during the hottest days of summer.

 

Why Hive Temperature Matters

The heart of every colony is the brood nest, where the queen lays her eggs and young bees develop.

For healthy larvae to grow properly, the brood area needs to remain at around 34–35°C.

If temperatures rise too high or fall too low, developing bees can be affected, making temperature control one of the colony's most important jobs.

Unlike humans, bees don't have thermostats or electric fans. Instead, thousands of worker bees cooperate to keep conditions just right.

Nature's Tiny Air Conditioning Team

One of the most fascinating sights during hot weather is seeing bees lined up at the entrance to the hive, all facing the same direction.

This is known as Fanning.

Rather than collecting nectar or pollen, their job is to beat their wings incredibly quickly, creating a steady flow of air through the hive.

Working together, hundreds of bees create a natural ventilation system that draws cooler air inside while pushing warm, humid air back out.

It's an extraordinary example of teamwork, every bee has a role to play.


Water: The Secret to Cooling a Hive

When the weather becomes especially hot, bees have another clever trick.

Worker bees leave the hive to collect tiny droplets of water from ponds, bird baths, streams and even morning dew.

Back at the hive, they spread these droplets onto the wax comb.

As the water slowly evaporates, it cools the surrounding air in much the same way perspiration cools our skin.

Combined with the constant airflow created by the fanning bees, this simple process keeps the hive remarkably stable even during heatwaves.

Beekeepers Help Too

During periods of prolonged hot weather, beekeepers also keep a close eye on their colonies.
